Dr Mohammad Zahid Khan
Department of Earth Sciences

This is my profound pleasure to be a part of the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad which is well known for its excellent academic environment overwhelmed with knowledge, peace and calmness. The Department of Earth Sciences has a dedicated, highly qualified and experienced faculty in Geology and Geophysics dominated by PhDs mostly from top-class universities of the world in various disciplines.

University Campus is located at an ideal place, on the foothills of the Himalaya having an easy access to Karakoram and Hindu Kush Ranges in the north, Salt and Trans-Indus Ranges in the south. The Department of Earth sciences offers 4 years BS Geology and Geophysics and 2 years MS degrees programs with specialisations in various disciplines of Geology and Geophysics. It offers admission in both Fall and Spring semesters starting in September and March respectively. High enrolment of students in both programs endorses its popularity and the trust of students and parents. The Department plans to offer PhD degree program in 2016.

The Department of Earth sciences is in the process of acquiring state-of-the-art scientific equipments to enhance its laboratory facilities and research capabilities. The Department has developed linkages with Chinese Academy of Sciences and Climate Change Group of Germany beside its research collaboration with the oil industry as well as reputed national and international universities. The PAPG (Pakistan Association of Petroleum Geoscientists) “student’s chapter”, in CIIT, Abbottabad provide exposure to our students and faculty in gaining knowledge about recent developments in Oil and Gas Exploration.

The graduates of earth sciences are playing an important role in the petroleum industry of Pakistan and the Middle East. It is indeed admirable that CIIT Abbottabad has taken the initiative to provide quality education in both disciplines. Moreover, the Department also offers applied geosciences such as engineering geology and economic geology.

An initiative is underway to offer short courses/seminars/workshops in various applied subjects to enhance job opportunities of our graduates.

We encourage young and energetic students who aspire to adopt a challenging, outdoor- career in Geophysics and Geology programs, eager to learn about the earth as a planet and want to gain knowledge and skills to unearth its hidden resources (oil and gas, minerals, and water) for the benefit of humanity in general and economic prosperity of Pakistan.
