10th Interntional Conference on Frontiers of Information Technology (FIT 2012)

A 3 day International Conference on “Frontiers of Information Technology” (FIT 2012) was recently hosted by the COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Abbottabad from 17-19 December, 2012. Renowned Scientist/Engineer Dr. Nawaz Sharif, Prinbcipal Consultant, Myraid Solutions was the Key Note speaker who presented talk on “Title: Implications of Emergent Mobile Intelligence Technologies in Developing Countries”. Program Co-chair  Dr.  Sajjad Ahmad Madani (Chairman Computer Science/Additional Registrar) welcomed the participants, apprised them of the history of event and highlighted the sub-events to unfold during the next three days. Prof. Dr. Khan Gul Jadoon, Director CIIT Abbottabad campus, gave a brief overview of the role of CIIT in promoting R&D culture in Pakistan and the contribution of FIT in this regard. Rector, CIIT Prof. Dr. S. M. Junaid Zaidi was the Chief Guest of the occasion briefed the audience about the achievements of CIIT during the last 10 years and highly appreciated the role of CIIT, Abbottabad in making this event at a real world class level.

The workshop was successfully organized for seven years and thus upgraded to International conference in the year 2009. FIT 2012 is technically sponsored by IEEE and IEEE Computer Society’s Technical Committee on Scalable Computing. The proceedings of the conference would be included in the IEEE Digital Library. The extended version of the selected papers will be published in selected journals. The focus areas include Communication and Networking, IT Security, Internet Governance, Grid Computing, Artificial Intelligence, Software Engineering, Computational Science, Computer Graphics, Image Processing & Pattern Recognition.

International Conference on Frontiers of Information Technology has emerged as a leading forum in Pakistan for IT professionals and researchers to discuss and present the latest research trends and results in the field of Information Technology. Besides oral presentation of 64 technical papers and 04 tutorials, 36 talks of renowned international and national speakers from leading universities were also part of the program. 5 PhD Symposiums was also a part of the conference.

In FIT 2012, Technical Sessions were composed of oral presentations of the research papers andinvited talks by national and international speakers. CIIT received A total of 286 papers are submitted from 30 different countries and different provinces of Pakistan by 564 Authors. Out of them 60 quality papers are selected based on standard selection criteria which is attached. Acceptance Rate is 24.3%. A total of 22 technical sessions were chaired by the renowned academicians. These sessions were a clear cut indication that research culture in our academic institutions is on the rise. A total of 33 invited talks were delivered on the latest trends in the areas of computing and electrical engineering.

Best IT Innovation Award (BITA)

First time FIT 12, BITA innovation award is introduced. It is a platform in recognizing and encouraging creativity and excellence. It is a platform to boost and identify individuals, organizations and companies whose innovations move us toward knowledge based economy. Through its annual awards competition, it provides concrete evidence of improving the quality of life. The key players of BITA will help to encourage serendipity through sharing ideas and building relationships and connections. Dr. Khurram Aziz, Assistant Professor EE, CIIT was the chief organizer of this award.

Title: “BlastSim – Simulation and Modeling of Suicide Bombing for Risk Planning and Mitigation” 

A panel discussion was also carried on during the proceedings.  The panel consisted of gurus in the field of IT from the academia as well as industry. The panel also proposed recommendations to alleviate the problems. The session was concluded after a long question-answer term. The event was concluded in a simple and graceful closing session. Program Co-chair Dr. Sajjad Ahmad Madani presented a brief report of the event. He also thanked core team of FIT 2012 lead by Dr. Khizar Hayat HoD Computer Science CIIT, Abbottabad. Prizes were awarded for the best oral paper presentation, poster paper, PhD symposium, and undergraduate project. Dr. Khan Gul Jadoon, Director CIIT, Abbottabad, thanked everyone for supporting the event with active participation. Chief Guest of the Closing ceremony Prof. Dr. S. M. Junaid Zaidi, Rector CIIT appreciated the efforts of CIIT in making it a successful event.

The quantum of success of FIT 2012 could not have been achieved without the presence of distinguished scientists and researchers who came all over from different countries and from leading universities of Pakistan. FIT 2012 would not have been possible without the conference sponsors including, Higher education commission of Pakistan (HEC), National Testing Services and ICT (R&D).
