5th South Asian International Conference (SAICON-2013) on Management, Innovation, Leadership, Economics and Strategy (MILES) was held on Dec 4 - 6, 2013 at Pearl Continental Bhurban, Murree Hills Pakistan. Since 2008, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT) has been annually organizing SAICON as the custodian of the South Asian Chapter of the Academy for Global Business Advancement (AGBA). The SAICON provides an excellent platform to the academicians, research scholars, corporate professionals, entrepreneurs, economists, and social scientists to interact and exchange their break through ideas and elaborate on ever-evolving market dynamics.
The SAICON endeavors to promote and facilitate the research culture. It aims at effectively playing its role in linking the researchers with the industry. Undertaking the responsibility entrusted by the honorable Rector Dr. S.M Junaid Zaidi (S.I), Department of Management Sciences – CIIT Abbottabad organized the SAICON-2013.
An overwhelming response, 462 abstracts were received by the deadline. 161 papers were accepted for presentation, including 28 foreign delegates from 12 different countries from across the globe covering 25 thematic tracks. Similarly, students and faculty from Karachi and interior Sind, Central and Southern Punjab, Baluchistan, Gilgit Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and notwithstanding Islamabad were among the registered participants. The total number of guests including invited speakers, registered authors and general participants was 304 altogether besides quite a sizeable number of students and faculty members from different campuses of CIIT who attended on daily basis.
Conference started with the welcome address by Program Chair Professor. Dr. Syed Amjad Farid Hasnu. Prof. Dr Qaiser Abbas Dean Faculty of Business Administration presented the brief history of SAICON. Keynote Address was delivered by Professor Dr. Mao Yu from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, China. It was about “Eight fold ‘Supply Chains’ in Economic Development of Contemporary China”. Professor Mao, discussed concept of supply chains to describe and analyze the rapid development of China in last 30 years. The dynamic mechanism and interaction of the multifactor, multilevel and multi-dimension of these supply chains was also part of his address. Mr. Jawad Majid Khan Group Head Islamic Banking, Silk Bank also addressed the august house. Mr. Jawad briefly dicussed the growth of Islamic Banking in Pakistan. Moreover he stressed upon the good governance that can lead to prosperity of a country.
Mr. Ghalib Nishter (S.I), President Khushhali Bank was guest of honor of the event.Mr. Nishter highlighted the historical prospective, scope and impact of the microfinance institutions in Pakistan. He also highlighted the challenges faced by the economy specially in banking and microfinance sector of Pakistan. He emphasized on development of new products and financial services through academia-industry collaboration to support low income segments of the society.
Dr. Haroon Rashid (S.I) Pro-Rector CIIT in his opening remarks appreciated the arrangements made and the overwhelming response from scholars across the globe. Furthermore, he highlighted the importance of SAICON in the South Asian Region and advised to conduct meeting with foreign deligates to discuss future of business education. Dr. Khan Gul Jadoon Director CIIT Abbottabad, appreciated the participation of national and foreign delegates and appreciated their active participation for making the conference successful.
The regular nine sessions in four parallel halls followed opening session and the scheduled 161 papers were presented over the period of three days thus making it 36 sessions in total. These sessions were chaired by the renowned international and national academicians and researchers. In addition to conventional session, SAICON 2013 managed to conduct new sessions that includes Engineerig Management; Education Management; Entrepreneurship & SME; Leadership; Managing Learning & Innovation; Organizational Development & Change Management; and Area Studies. Special feature of these sessions was the PhD colloquium giving exposure to the PhD scholars to have feedback by the experts on their respective research topics and methodology. Nine PhD scholars, in two sessions had oral presentations of their research topics chaired by Dr. Ahmad Jamal (Cardiff Univesity, UK) and Dr. Saeed Akbar(University of Liverpool, UK).
The proceedings also included three sessions of invited talks. First session was Chaired by Prof Dr. Mehmood Ahmad Bodla and the speakers were Prof. Ahmad Khalid, talked about “Growth, Economic Management and Poverty Reduction: A Global Perspective with a focus on Pakistan” and Dr. Alberto G. Brugnoni discussed “Money in Islam”. Second session of invited talks was chaired by Prof. Dr. Shehla Amjad, presenters, Dr. Ahmad Jamal talked about “Festivities and Ritualistic Consumption: Learning from the Chinese-Malaysian Consumers' Experiences” and Dr. Abdullah Z. Sheikh enlightended the audience on “Complexities of the triangular employment relationship: Is Agency employment a unitary concept?”. The last session was chaired by Prof. Zhong XiWei where Dr. Bahaudin G. Mujtaba gave talk about “Leadership and Employee Engagement: How Can We Get Everyone Involved?”.
The conference ended with panel discussion, session comprised of distinguished panelists from industry and academia, both from Pakistan and abroad. Panelist included Dr. Mao Yu,
Dr. Faridullah, Dr. Abdullah Z. Sheikh, Dr. Ahmed Jamal, Dr. Mushtaq A. Sajid and Dr. Ehsan Malik. Professor Dr. Mehmood A Bodla Moderated the panel disscussion. Panelists discussed different aspects, prospects and case scenarios of “Management, Innovation, Leadership, Economics and Strategy”.
In concluding ceremoney Honourabale Rector CIIT, Dr. S.M Junaid Zaidi (S.I) appreciated the organizers for carrying on the legacy and successfully conducting 5th SAICON. Furthermore, he annouced the dates for 6th SAICON i.e. 11-13th August 2014. In the end he appreciated the contributions of all the stakeholder that also include conference sponsors namely Higher Education Commission (HEC), National Testing Service (NTS), COMSATS Headquarter, INIT, Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), Allied Bank Limited, Habib Bank Limited and Bank Alfalah.
The conference ended with souvenir distribution ceremony in which shields were presented by honorable Rector Dr. S.M Junaid Zaidi (S.I) among distinguished deligates and organizers. A confrence souvenir was presented to honorable Rector by Dr. Khan Gul Jadoon, Director CIIT Abbottabad.
