Department of Electrical Engineering, 16-18 December 2013
11th International Conference on Frontiers of Information Technology (FIT-2013) was held on 16-18 December 2013 at Serena Hotel Islamabad Pakistan. This is the 11th consecutive year that COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, CIIT is organizing this event. Information Technology has played a vital role in the past few decades and reshaped social standards among human beings. The conference was technically sponsored by IEEE Islamabad Chapter, IEEE Industrial Electronics Society, and IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Scalable Computing.
The FIT traditionally, had been trying to enthuse research interest among young researchers by introducing them with ever changing horizons of information technology. This year “Big Data" was the theme of the conference. The conference started with a keynote address, delivered by Professor Dr Elisa Bertino from Purdue University, USA. The title of her address was “Challenges and Opportunities with Big Data”. It emphasized on new trends and research opportunities/scope for universities of Pakistan.
FIT 2013 was attended by world renowned scholars and researchers from different parts of the world including USA, UK, China, Australia, Kuwait, Austria, Estonia and Pakistan. In order to take full advantage of their ideas and research, the conference was divided into technical sessions. Each session was composed of oral presentations of the research papers and invited talks by national and international speakers. FIT13 received 208 submissions out of which 58 were selected for oral presentation, along with 05 PhD symposia, after a thorough and blind review process yielding an acceptance rate of 28.50 %. This ratio was 24.12% in 2012, 27% in 2011, 28% in 2010 and 30% in 2009. A total of 599 reviews were completed by reviewers from different universities of Pakistan and abroad. The authors came from different countries as well as from all four provinces of Pakistan. A total of 28 technical sessions were organized and chaired by renowned academicians. These sessions were a clear cut indication that research culture in our academic institutions is on upward pace. A total of 33 invited talks were delivered on the latest trends in the areas of computing and electrical engineering. Besides this, 03 tutorials, 03 workshops and 05 PhD symposia were presented.
The conference ended with panel discussion session comprised of distinguished panelists from industry and academia, both from Pakistan and abroad. The topic of discussion was “Revolutionizing Society with Big Data”. It was highly fruitful session for our participants.
COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, last year, launched a national level contest on innovative ideas with the name Best IT Innovation Award (BITA). BITA recognizes and encourages creativity in the field of IT. This year following the same practice BITA 2013 was held, where numerous project proposals were received of which six were shortlisted for the presentation at the conference. The winners of the BITA awards were participants from Institute of Space Technology, Islamabad. The project proposal titled “Fetal Anomaly Detection”. The winners were awarded the prize money of PKR 1 Million to develop and implement their idea.
In order to encourage our students, a student project exhibition was arranged on the sidelines of the conference. Students from different departments of various campuses of CIIT took part in the competition. Participants and speakers of the conference visited the projects one by one and encouraged the young students of CIIT. Finally a committee of judges selected two best student projects which were awarded prizes and cash awards by the worth Rector.
