The Department of Development Studies Celebrated International Women Day on the 12th of March 2014. The Theme of this year’s International women’s day as defined by the UN was “Equality for women is progress for all”. Ms Shumaila Kausar, Program Coordinator, Insan Foundation, Islamabad Trust as a guest speaker spoke on the occasion emphasizing how gender equality, empowerment of women, provision of human rights and the eradication of poverty are essential to economic and social development.
Dr. Shehla Amjad, Chairperson of the Department of Development Studies while speaking on the occasion highlighted how countries with more gender equality have been able to achieve better economic growth. Therefore she said that there is a need to make gender equality an integral part of every aspect of life and human endeavor. Equality for women leads to inclusive growth, reduces poverty and inequality and contributes to peace and security.
The Students of the Department of Development Studies made the event more vibrant and colorful with presenting a documentary on Pakistani women and their achievements in different walks of life. A Skit was presented on how a girl in our society faces discrimination and inequality and how knowledge and awareness can bring her back into the light and make her stand up for herself from the abyss of injustice. Female Bachelor Students of the Department, who recently returned from Norway after completing a short course on Gender Studies, shared their personal experiences on the “Role of Women, at home and abroad”. Student from different schools and colleges participated in the poster competition event. Their participation and activities indeed made the event very colorful and interesting.
