12th International Conference on Frontiers of Information Technology

12th International Conference on Frontiers of Information Technology (FIT 2014) was held from 17-19 December 2014 at Serena Hotel, Islamabad. The conference was organized by Department of Computer Science, CIIT Abbottabad.

FIT2014 was a blend of different events comprising the following:

  • Key note address, Technical sessions including invited talks, Tutorials, Workshops, PhD symposium, Best IT Innovation Award (BITA), project exhibition and Panel discussion.The key note address was delivered by Professor Dr. Scott C Smith, North Dakota State University, USA. The title of the key note address was “Advanced Technologies for Tomorrow’s Smart Cities”, which was thought provoking and full of ideas.
  • Technical Sessions were composed of oral presentations of the research papers and invited talks by national and international speakers. 309 technical paper were submitted from various countries around the world out of which 68 papers were accepted after a thorough and blind review process. A total of 804 reviews were completed by 315 reviewers from different universities and industries of Pakistan as well as abroad with an average of 2.6 reviews per paper. The authors came from different countries as well as from all four provinces of Pakistan. A total of 31 technical sessions were organized and were chaired by renowned academicians. These sessions were a clear cut indication that research culture in our academic institutions is on upward pace. A total of 68 technical papers were presented as oral presentations besides the invited talks, which was another main component of the technical sessions. A total of 27 invited talks were delivered on the latest trends in the areas of computer science and electrical engineering. These talks were thought provoking and source of inspiration for the audience.

  • Five tutorial sessions were conducted on:
  1. “Building your own Cloud with OpenStack”, by Moiz Arif, Waqas Riaz from xFlow Research and Junaid Qadir, NUST, Pakistan
  2. “Introduction to GPGPU Computing”, by Jawwad Shamsi, University of Computer and Emerging Sciences, Karachi
  3. “Tutorial on Computational Modeling”, by Waqar ul Qounain Syed, PUCIT, Lahore, Pakistan
  4. “Complex Network Design From Interaction Data in Complex Systems: A Tutorial” by Muaz Niazi, COMSATS Institute of IT, Pakistan
  5. “Introduction to Modern OpenGL in C++” by Mobeen Movania, DHA Suffa University, Pakistan

All the tutorial discussions were very interactive and healthy participation was observed. These tutorial discussions have opened new corridors in the learning of these domains.

  • Two Workshop sessions were conducted which gave the participants a very useful hands-on experience. These included:
  1. “Going Smart: The evolution & significance of Location”, by Basil Ansari, Muhammad Ahmed and Muhammad Faraz from SyntecX, Pakistan
  2. “New Method for Solving Non-homogeneous Cauchy-Euler Equation of 2nd or Higher Order”, Abdul Majeed Siddiqui, Pennsylvania State University, USA, Dr Tahira Haroon, CIIT, Pakistan
  • PhD symposium was also part of FIT 14 where young researchers participated and shared their on-going research. Thorough deliberations were carried out and remedial measures were suggested for the problems faced by young researchers.
  • A panel discussion on “Smart Cities”.
  • Besides this a total of 35 projects were also displayed by undergraduate students of CIIT campuses. The projects were evaluated by experts from abroad and Pakistan.
