Community World Service Asia, is a regional non-governmental organization which implements humanitarian and development activities in Asia. CWS aims to address factors that set people apart by celebrating inclusiveness, shared values, diversity, and interdependence. Main focus areas of CWS include: disaster management; education; health; livelihoods; peace and governance; water, sanitation, and the environment; and quality and accountability. The organization is engaged in capacity building at the local and regional levels through self-implementation and collaboration with partners. Present in the region since 1954, Community World Service Asia and is registered with the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan, where the majority of its projects are implemented.
Department of Development Studies, CIIT Abbottabad having known the contribution of the organization in humanitarian and development activities in general and in disaster response activities in particular, invited Community World Service Asia to visit the department at Abbottabad campus. After the preliminary meeting with the organization, both the organizations agreed to hold a one day workshop. The workshop took place on April 16, 2015 at CIIT Abbottabad.
The faculty members from the Department of Development Studies and Department of Management Sciences participated in the session. Ms. Ai. Morita, Program Manager, Peace and Democracy and Mr. Rizwan Iqbal, Program Coordinator, Quality & Accountability represented Community World Service. Dr. Bhadar Nawab, Head Department of Development Studies, CIIT Abbottabad opened the session with welcome address followed by a detailed presentation about the CIIT system, CIIT Abbottabad campus and the Department.
Ms. Ai. Morita gave a detailed overview of Community World Service, its activities in the region and work experience in Pakistan. Mr. Rizwan Iqbal introduced The Sphere Project and how induction of Sphere standards can help improve the curricula of disaster related courses. The last session included the presentations from the selected faculty members introducing the course contents of disaster response and disaster management.
After the lunch break, there was focused discussion regarding the areas about how to strengthen the mutual cooperation. There were some common grounds found and an MOU is expected in near future. The honorable guests were presented with a souvenir by the Director CIIT Abbottabad.
