A Joint Venture of HEC-NTS Collaboration (18-21 July 2011)
The 3rd Training of Trainers (TOT) Workshop on “Effective Test Item Construction Techniques” was held at COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Abbottabad. The workshop has been organized by Higher Education Commission (HEC) and the National Testing Service (NTS) Pakistan and attended by faculty members belonging to nine public sector Higher Educational Institutes.
During the inauguration ceremony, Mr. Murtaza Noor, Project Manager/Focal Person, from HEC apprised the participants of the background and objective of the workshop. He informed that the main objective of the workshop is to provide an opportunity to the faculty members to design and construct test items for effective examination and evaluation system. HEC, since its inception, has undertaken various steps to improve teaching and research at higher educational institutes of Pakistan with special focus over remote areas, he added. Rana Riaz Saeed, Senior Project Manager, NTS Pakistan through a presentation highlighted the objectives, working and performance of National Testing Service Pakistan. He was of the view that this joint collaboration between HEC and NTS would be quite helpful in improving state of test development in higher educational institutes of Pakistan.
The main topics under discussion during the workshop included test planning (identify learning outcomes; preparing a table of specifications and choosing appropriate test item types); test preparation (constructing good test items; reviewing and editing items according to guidelines; arranging items and groupings; preparing directions for the test and individual items; deciding on method of scoring) and test analysis and revision (performing test/item analysis to determine difficulty, discrimination and reliability; deciding to retain, edit or discard items; revising the test etc).
The workshop was conducted by renowned educationists including Prof. Dr. Najma Najam, Vice Chancellor, Karakorum International University, Gilgit, Prof. Dr. Anila Kamal, Director, National Institute of Phycology, Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Prof. Dr. Mah Nazir Riaz, Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences, Frontier Women University Peshawar and Prof. Dr. Iftikhar Ahmed, University of Management and Technology Lahore. They also urged the participants to share the knowledge and skills learned from the workshop with their peers at their respective universities.
Prof. Khan Gul Jadoon , Director CIIT, Abbottabad thanked HEC and NTS for selecting CIIT Abbottabad, for organizing such a useful academic activity. He also thanked the resource persons for sharing their valuable knowledge and expertise with the participants. He also lauded the contribution of HEC for bringing about positive and revolutionary changes in higher educational sector of Pakistan.
