World Space Week celebrated at CIIT Abbottabad on October 10-11, 2017 with the sponsorship of SUPARCO.
The World Space Week, is an international celebration of the contribution that space science and technology makes for the betterment of the human condition. United Nations has declared World Space Week as October 4-10 annually. It is celebrated in 65 nations of the world including Pakistan. Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), as a national space agency, has been regularly conducting World Space Week activities each year since 2005 to increase awareness of space technology and to promote its peaceful usage amongst students and the masses in Pakistan. This year as well, SUPARCO has extended WSW activities throughout Pakistan.
At CIIT Abbottabad the Space Week was celebrated on October 10-11, 2017 and about 12 colleges and schools of Hazara division participated. Theme for this year’s World Space Week is ‘Exploring New Worlds in Space’.During this time the events and educational programs related to space are held globally every year. The following competitions took place during world space week 2017. Bilingual Essay Writing Competition, Space Photography, Bilingual Declamation Competition, E-Poster Competition, Exploring the Earth with Google Earth, Painting and sketching Competition, World Space Quiz, Space Documentary, Satellite Model Making competition, and at the end a Closing Ceremony was arranged to award certificates and prizes among the participating students. There were more than 200 students from different colleges of Hazara region who participated in different activities. Students of three different societies were the main organizers of the event, which included COMSATS Literary Society (CLS), Aadrish, fine arts society, and IEEE an Engineering students’ society. Mr Khalid Khan, DCMA Project Director Crop Watch Systems was the guest of honor at the occasion, and Mr. Bilal Aslam, Assistant Manager, SUPARCO was the main coordinator from SUPARCO. The schools and colleges that participated include: Army Burn Hall Girls School & College, Government College of Technology, Abbottabad, Pakistan International Public School & Girls College, Abbottabad, Tameer-i-Nau Public School & College, Mansehra, Mansehra Public School, Mansehra, Ummul Atfaal School, Haripur, Beacon House School System, Abbottabad, The City School, (Senior) Abbottabad, The Creators College, Abbottabad, Government Girls Comprehensive College, Abbottabad, and a few others.
Overall the event was a great success and the students from different schools and colleges were happy. They found the environment on campus very friendly and were inspired by the faculty and students of the campus as well as the focal person from SUPARCO. Space Week left a lasting impression on the students and they looked upto SUPARCO visiting in the coming years so they can participate in this healthy activity in future too in the city of Abbottabad.
