Cardiovascular Research Group (CVRG)

One of the main objectives of the cardiovascular research group is to promote research with emphasis on the quality of its output. Despite many advances in recent years, cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of death for both men and women. Our mission is to explore the underlying mechanisms responsible for major cardiovascular effects of natural products, medicinal plant extracts, phytochemicals, and newly synthesized compounds. The group is also aimed to identify new targets for the development of cardioprotective and vasculoprotective drugs.

Our current areas of research interest include screening of extracts, fractions and pure compounds of selected indigenous medicinal plants for their possible blood pressure lowering, vasomodulating, and cardioprotective effects. We are also exploring the potential of medicinal plants/natural products combating major diseases of respiratory and gastrointestinal systems as complications of cardiovascular diseases.
